Reader-supported

Does Whole Foods sell beef tallow? Which brands are listed (EPIC, Kettle & Fire, Fond, SCP spray), where to look in the store, and how it compares with online.

Beef Tallow at Whole Foods: Brands, Sizes, and What to Check on the Label

Yes, Whole Foods sells beef tallow. As of September 2026, wholefoodsmarket.com lists jarred tallow from EPIC (11 oz), Kettle & Fire (14 oz), and Fond (14 oz), plus South Chicago Packing Wagyu Beef Tallow Spray (7 fl oz) and EPIC bison tallow. Stock varies by store, so check the product page for your local store in the Whole Foods app or on the website before you make the trip.

Beef Tallow Whole Foods Lists Right Now

These are the tallow products that had live product pages on wholefoodsmarket.com when this guide was written. “Listed” means the product has a page on Whole Foods’ site as of September 2026; it does not guarantee your store has it on the shelf.

A few notes on the lineup:

  • EPIC is the biggest brand in the lineup. It is owned by General Mills and has national grocery distribution. Our EPIC beef tallow review covers how it cooks and how it compares with smaller brands.
  • Kettle & Fire is best known for bone broth, and its tallow sits in the same glass-jar, grass-fed positioning as its broths. The 14 oz jar gives you a bit more fat per jar than EPIC’s 11 oz.
  • The SCP spray is the odd one out. It is a cooking spray made from wagyu tallow, useful for air fryers and grill grates, and far too small for frying. Whole Foods called out wagyu tallow cooking spray by name in its October 2025 forecast of 2026 food trends, which put “Tallow Takeover” on its list.
  • Fatworks, the brand most people associate with grocery-store tallow, did not have a product page on wholefoodsmarket.com when we checked. If you want Fatworks specifically, Walmart and Costco list it (see our Fatworks beef tallow review for where it is sold), or you can order it online.

Whole Foods also stocks foods cooked in tallow, which some shoppers confuse with the fat itself: Jesse & Ben’s frozen fries made with grass-fed beef tallow and Somos refried beans made with grass-finished tallow both have product pages. They are handy if you want tallow-cooked convenience food, but they are not a substitute for a jar you cook with.

Where to Find Tallow in the Store

Whole Foods does not shelve tallow in one consistent spot. Check these three places:

  1. The oil and vinegar aisle, next to ghee, avocado oil, and coconut oil. This is the most common location for shelf-stable jars like EPIC and Kettle & Fire.
  2. The cooking spray section, for the SCP wagyu tallow spray.
  3. The meat department, especially stores with a full-service butcher counter. Some butchers can sell you raw beef suet or fat trim if you would rather render tallow at home. Ask at the counter; availability depends on the store’s cutting schedule.

If you cannot find it, the Whole Foods app shows whether an item is stocked at your selected store, and store staff can look up the item by name.

What to Check on the Label

The front of a tallow jar tends to carry more marketing than information. Turn it around and look for these points.

A one-ingredient list. The ingredient panel should read “beef tallow” (or “rendered beef fat”) and nothing else. Some products add rosemary extract as an antioxidant, and some sprays add oils or propellants. None of those are dealbreakers, but you should know what you are buying.

Grass-fed vs. grass-finished. “Grass-fed” alone can mean the animal ate grass for part of its life and was finished on grain. “Grass-finished” or “100% grass-fed” means grass through the end. Finishing diet affects the fat’s color and fatty acid profile: grass-finished tallow is usually more yellow because of carotenoids from pasture. Our guide to grass-fed vs. grain-fed tallow explains the differences in more depth.

Wagyu claims. “Wagyu” on a US label almost always means American Wagyu, which is typically a wagyu cross. Wagyu fat has a higher share of monounsaturated fat than conventional beef fat, so it is softer at room temperature and richer-tasting. That matters for searing and spraying, less so for deep frying.

Deodorized or not. Most jarred cooking tallows are not labeled as deodorized and keep a mild beef aroma, which helps with fries and steak. Deodorized tallow is more common in foodservice and DIY-skincare products. If the label does not say, assume it has some beef smell. See why tallow smells for what is normal.

Organic certification. None of the tallow jars listed at Whole Foods in September 2026 carried a USDA Organic claim in their listing titles. If organic matters to you, the Fatworks Organic Grass-Fed Beef Tallow is sold online, and our roundup of organic beef tallow covers other certified options.

Jar size vs. your use. An 11-14 oz jar is sized for searing, roasting, eggs, and baking. A single batch of deep-fried fries in a Dutch oven can take most of two jars, so jarred grocery tallow is an expensive way to deep fry.

Whole Foods vs. Buying Tallow Online

Whole Foods is convenient if you already shop there and want a jar today. Online, you get more brands, bigger containers, and usually a lower cost per ounce.

The same EPIC jar Whole Foods sells is available on Amazon: EPIC Beef Tallow, Grass-Fed, 11 oz. So is Kettle & Fire’s 14 oz grass-fed tallow and the SCP Wagyu Beef Tallow Spray. Check current price on both sides; the in-store price and the online price are not always the same.

If you want something Whole Foods does not stock:

Who should buy at Whole Foods

  • You shop there weekly and want one jar at a time for searing, eggs, and roasted vegetables.
  • You want to use a Prime discount or pick up with the rest of your groceries.
  • You want to try tallow once before committing to a larger container.

Who should buy online

  • You deep fry, cook with tallow daily, or want tubs and pails.
  • You want a specific brand (Fatworks, wagyu jars, organic) that your store does not stock.
  • You live far from a Whole Foods.

For other stores, farmers markets, and local butchers, our beef tallow near me guide walks through every option by state, and the state pages (for example Texas and California) list local sources.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Whole Foods sell beef tallow?

Yes. As of September 2026, wholefoodsmarket.com lists EPIC Beef Tallow (11 oz), Kettle & Fire Grass-Fed Beef Tallow (14 oz), Fond Beef Tallow (14 oz), South Chicago Packing Wagyu Beef Tallow Spray (7 fl oz), and EPIC bison tallow. Stock varies by store, so check your store in the app.

What aisle is beef tallow in at Whole Foods?

Usually the cooking oil aisle near ghee and avocado oil. The tallow spray sits with cooking sprays. Stores with a butcher counter may also sell raw suet for rendering.

Does Whole Foods carry Fatworks tallow?

Fatworks did not have a product page on wholefoodsmarket.com when we checked in September 2026. Individual stores sometimes carry regional items that are not listed online, so ask in store, or buy Fatworks online or at Walmart or Costco.

Is Whole Foods beef tallow grass-fed?

EPIC and Kettle & Fire both describe their tallow as grass-fed. Read the full label if grass-finished matters to you, since “grass-fed” alone does not always mean the animal was grass-finished.

Is it cheaper to buy beef tallow at Whole Foods or online?

For a single jar, prices are often similar; check current price on both. For larger quantities, online wins because you can buy 42 oz tubs and multi-pound pails that grocery stores do not stock.

Can I use Whole Foods tallow for skincare?

The jars are sold as cooking fats and none are labeled as deodorized, so expect a mild beef smell. If you want to make balms, a deodorized tallow is the usual starting point. For cooking, the jars work as sold.
